Becoming a Christian

Discovering the Purpose of Life

Many people have no idea what the purpose of life is really all about.  They ask, “Why am I here?”  They look for happiness through possessions, pleasure and power.  But those things don’t bring long term satisfaction.  Real satisfaction comes from understanding why you’re here.  Here are some things that the Bible makes very clear.

You can take the steps to becoming a follower of Christ by praying a simple prayer of commitment to God.

“Dear Jesus, I thank You for making me and loving me.  I’ve ignored You and gone my own way.  I’m sorry for my sins.  I need You and I ask You to forgive me.  As much as I know how, I want to follow You for the rest of my life. Please come into my life as You promised and make me the kind of person You want me to be.  Thank You for dying on the cross for me and giving me Your free gift of salvation.  Amen.”

1.

God made you to love you!  He has a plan for your life!

“Even before He made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be Holy and without fault in His eyes.  God decided in advance to adopt us into His Own Family by bringing us to Himself through Jesus Christ.  This is what He wanted to do, and it gave Him great pleasure” (Ephesians 1:4-5 NLT).  You were created to enjoy a personal relationship with God!  You are special to God.

2.

You don’t experience God’s love or plan because of sin.

Our natural tendency is to run our lives the way we want and to ignore what God has to say.  That’s what the Bible calls sin.  “All of us like sheep have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way” (Isaiah 53:6).  Sin breaks our relationship with God and causes us to live outside of His will.  “It’s your sins that have cut you off from God” (Isaiah 59:2).

3.

The solution to your problem is Jesus.

God Himself came to earth as a human being to bring us back to Himself. If any other way would have worked, Jesus would not have come at Christmas.  Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through Me!” (John 14:6)  Jesus came to take care of your sin problem.  “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23).  Jesus lived among us and died on the Cross because He loves us and wants us to know Him.  God did His part to restore our relationship with Him.  He took the initiative.  Now He waits for us to individually accept what He did.

4.

God wants you to accept His gift of forgiveness.

Admit that you’ve ignored God and sinned.  Ask for His forgiveness.  “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).

Believe that Jesus died, rose again on Easter, and lives today to pay the penalty for your sins.  “If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9).

Accept God’s free gift of salvation.  You can’t earn it – you can only receive it.  “For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9).

Invite Jesus Christ to come into your life and to be your Savior.  “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God” (John 1:12-13).  “Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and will dine with him, and he with Me” (Revelation 3:20).

Whoever calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved.
